Have you ever been tempted to complain about something that you had no control over?  I’ve been thinking lately about just how much “real” control that you and I really have. I’ve come to the conclusion that, in reality, we don’t have any control—zilch; nada, zero control over any situation.  Our only control arena is in the area in which we respond to our situations.  Most often I find that we respond, not in a controlled manner, but out of an emotional reaction to our circumstances.
Scripture: Philippians 2:12-18
V.v. 14-16—“Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.”
Observation:
Paul was commending the church at Philippi for their adherence to the word of God; not only when they were in his presence, but also in his absence.  Their true relationship with God and with him showed in their actions.  They were showing in their actions that God had saved them and was working in them to show His grace and mercy to others.  How did they do this? Well, Paul’s instructions to them indicates that it was a process of working out the salvation that they had received.  They were not work for salvation but rather to show that they had already received it.
Application:
When we see the writers of the Bible give instruction to the churches, we can receive those same instructions as guides for us to live by as well.  Complaining about things tend to cloudy the water, so to speak, for the follower of Jesus Christ who wants his or her light to shine.  Shining our light indicates our understanding that we know that we are not in control, but God is.  Light show us the way.  Matthew 5:16 tells us to let our light so shine among men that they might see our good works and glorify the Father who is in heaven.  Hold on to the Word of God for it is the light that shines in the darkness, lighting the way for us to go.
Prayer:
Father, help us to work for Your Kingdom to show that Your light shines in us.  And let us take it into the darkness so that others might see it and believe.  We pray in Jesus name, Amen!
